What Is Health?

We defined “Wellness” for you last month. Continuing with this theme, what is the definition of “Health?”

I have asked hundreds of people this question and have empirically concluded that most of us have no idea how to define “Health!”

Beginning with the worst answer I’ve received, I asked what her definition of health was, to which she responded, “Doctor, I have health insurance; therefore, I am healthy.”


Most people simply answered, “To feel good.” i.e. to have no pain.


These were adults! It’s ironic that most kids answer this better than ‘educated’ adults. For you who answered like those above, I ask, “If you don’t have pain, does that mean you’re healthy?” Said another way, “Does the absence of symptoms represent the presence of health?”  A few scored partial points, and even fewer aced this simple quiz; nevertheless, our society and our entire education structure is literally sick. Most need to re-define their health paradigm. Only then will there be an awakening!

When looking at mostly private healthcare expenditure, the US spends two-and-a-half times the average ‘industrialized’ country. Yet, the US is the among the sickest of these countries. Why is this?

Do you think that if we answer this question with more clarity and certainty, then we would better understand how to become healthy and stay healthy better and longer? I do!

Albert Einstein said,

“If you cannot explain it simply, you do not know it well enough.”

How are we to obtain something we can’t even describe?

In your health, you will not succeed without clearly defined outcomes.

On July 22nd, 1946, representatives signed a constitutional definition of “Health” written by the World Health Organization. It reads,

“Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or [symptoms].”

Many are unaware of the existence of this globally-accepted definition, let alone it’s significance.


Please, don’t take your health for granted!

It is unfortunate that it is so difficult for any individual to fully appreciate his/her health until it’s gone. When this happens, the first symptoms may be the last, i.e. heart attack, stroke, kidney failure…

Here are three very important reminders of fundamental health advice that I wish someone had taught me earlier in life:

  1. The preservation of health is easier and much cheaper than the cure for disease.
  2. Symptoms are the last thing to show up in any disease process.
  3. You don’t have to have a problem to be better tomorrow.


We cannot believe that we are doing everything for ourselves and our family if Chiropractic is not included in our lives. If you or your family have not been screened for nerve interference, make an appointment today and make the effort to improve health.
